HERI-TECH - Advanced Documentation of Cultural Heritage

HERI-TECH is a research project focused on developing and evaluating advanced methodologies for the digital documentation and 3D representation of cultural heritage. The project combines state-of-the-art capture technologies and computational workflows to support the accurate digitisation of cultural objects, monuments, buildings and archaeological sites.

By integrating multiple documentation techniques, HERI-TECH aims to establish a holistic workflow for cultural heritage digitisation, capable of addressing heritage assets of different scales, materials and levels of complexity.

Our Approach

HERI-TECH investigates the integration of complementary digital documentation technologies, including:

  • LiDAR and terrestrial laser scanning
  • Aerial documentation using drones
  • Photogrammetry
  • Handheld 3D scanning
  • Mobile LiDAR capture
  • 360° image and video capture
  • 3D reconstruction and data fusion

A central research objective is the combination of photogrammetric and laser-scanning data into unified, high-quality 3D representations, enabling the documentation of heritage assets ranging from small museum artefacts to historic buildings and large archaeological environments.

Research & Pilots

The project moves beyond equipment acquisition by investigating, testing and validating methodologies through real-world cultural heritage use cases. Individual technologies are first evaluated through small-scale experiments and are subsequently integrated into a common documentation framework and validated through a comprehensive pilot study.

The resulting workflow supports the complete digital heritage pipeline:

Capture → 3D Reconstruction → Data Integration → Digital Documentation → Cultural Heritage Applications

The generated digital assets can subsequently support applications such as virtual and augmented reality, digital exhibitions, interactive experiences, cultural routes, education and 3D reproduction.

Expected Impact

HERI-TECH strengthens the research infrastructure of the Intelligent Interaction Research Group and the Department of Cultural Technology and Communication at the University of the Aegean, enabling advanced research and collaborations with cultural institutions in the field of large-scale cultural heritage digitisation.
